Works start on grounds of new Nairn Academy
Preparation works have started as part of the development of a new and much-awaited secondary school for Nairn.
Last week diggers were spotted in action on the site for the new Nairn Academy.
Although a council spokesperson has confirmed that the Nairn Academy project is currently at the tender stage, advanced works are underway to form a new access road.
This will also include the start of some of the potentially disruptive earthworks while the school campus is unoccupied for the summer holidays.
In June the planning application for the building was given the green light, with councillors overwhelmingly supporting the project for what is felt as a “much-needed” development.
With an investment of £54million, the new three-storey school will be built near the current academy in Duncan Drive, and is expected to have a capacity of more than 1000 pupils (adding almost 400 spaces to the current roll of 680 pupils).
After a delay of six months from the original plans – which would have seen the new school completed by 2025 – the goal to see the site operational for the school year starting in August 2026.
