Inverness bus changes ‘could leave older people isolated’; and ‘well done’ Fergus Ewing
Bus changes could leave older people isolated
I write with deep concern following confirmation that Stagecoach will withdraw bus services 4 and 7 from July 7, routes that connect Milton of Leys with the city centre via Raigmore Hospital, Culcabock Road and Kingsmills.
These routes are more than just buses, they are lifelines. They are essential for older residents, many of whom do not drive and rely on these services to reach the hospital, attend GP appointments, access shops and maintain independence. Their removal threatens to isolate an entire section of our population who deserve better.
Stagecoach has cited financial losses as the reason for the cuts, but the broader social cost is being passed on to vulnerable residents. While I recognise the economic pressures facing transport providers, public services, particularly those supported by concessionary travel schemes funded by the Scottish Government, must not be judged on profit alone.
I have asked Stagecoach and the Highland Council to work together urgently to find a solution. Could more flexible, smaller vehicles be considered for inner city routes? Are there alternative ways to deliver these essential services more efficiently?
As Highland Older People’s Champion, I cannot stand by while core transport links are severed without clear alternatives. I urge both decision-makers and the public to consider the impact this will have, and to press for answers before these routes disappear.
This is not just about a timetable change. It’s about fairness, dignity and the right of our older residents to stay connected to the city they helped build.

Fergus Ewing decision will cause the SNP ‘convulsions’
Veteran SNP Inverness and Nairn MSP Fergus Ewing recently confirmed he will stand as an independent candidate at next year’s Holyrood elections, after months of clashing over policy with his party.
“Well done Mr Ewing. I don’t live in your constituency but I am in total admiration of your approach to putting your constituents’ interests ahead of those of your party. Whilst I’m not an Indy supporter I would willingly vote for a candidate who is, if he/she had your approach to representing the electorate. The difficulties you’ve faced of late and the decision you’ve made should alert the Indy supporters that the SNP has lost its way. It doesn’t truly pursue independence any more and it lacks the talent and skills to run a devolved government!” - Brian McKaig
