GROUND work has started to create a new hotel on the riverside in Inverness.

Contractors from HDR group have started work at the site of the former swimming pool in Glebe Street which is to be occupied by a new 175-bedroom hotel.

The development was granted planning permission in December 2019 after an initial design for the hotel, by Dutch developer Vastint Hospitality, was rejected and described as “hideous” by members of Highland Council’s south planning applications committee.

Revised designs reduced the height of the hotel by one floor.

The site had lain empty for more than 20 years by that point.

The main block of the new four-star Marriott hotel will house around 151 rooms with a further 24 in a separate block.

The ground floor will provide space for a bar and dining area along with meeting space and a gym.

The site was also provide parking of around 41 spaces for guests.

Councillor Emma Roddick said: “It is fantastic to see work beginning at the old swimming pool site on Glebe Street after it has lain desolate for so long.

“Once it is safe tourism is going to be incredibly important o the city’s recovery from Covid.”
