AN assistant site manager put his time on furlough to good use by studying for a qualification that could pave the way for his next step up the career ladder.

Scott Murray (28) works with Tulloch Homes where he has just taken up his latest assignment,. working on the firm’s Ness Side development in Inverness.

As coronavirus shut down the building industry earlier this year, however, he decided to use his extra free time constructively and has now earned himself an NVQ diploma in construction site management – residential development.

It was something he said he had been aiming to do for some time.

“With the day job, I found it increasingly challenging to fit in the time to study”, he said. “But I saw being on furlough as a great opportunity to get cracking, rather than sitting around doing nothing.”

He added: “I worked intensively to complete the task and I’m delighted to have received my qualification certificate coinciding with my return to work.

“It’s a real boost – and lockdown has certainly paved the way for me.”

Billy McKay, the construction director of Tulloch Homes, said: “We’re very impressed by Scott not putting his feet
up during furlough but instead enhancing his career prospects by working to gain this qualification
status, which site managers are expected to reach.

“It shows he has the kind of commitment, ability and attitude which can land him a site of his own before too long.”

Mr Murray, a joiner to trade, already has a degree in architectural technology and says he was keen to work for Tulloch Homes because of its policy of developing site managers in-house.
