When the Inverness Half Marathon was cancelled this year a group of four fundraisers decided to run it anyway for two Highland charities.

They were hoping to raise £500 for Mikeysline and Highland Hospice and so far they have raised more than £850.

The four colleagues – Andrea Stewart, Martine Bushell, Kailey MacWilliam and Fiona Clark – ran the 13.11-mile route at the end of May and they picked what was probably one of the hottest days of the year so far to complete their virtual half-marathon.

On their online fundraising page, Ms Stewart, who is a prisoner custody officer, said: “We all have one thing in common, our absolute passion to raise money for charity, but we couldn’t decide on one cause so we‘ve decided to hopefully raise money for Highland Hospice and Mikeysline.”

They originally started as a female running group and within a couple of months they were joined by male colleagues who also took part in the challenge.

Ms Stewart said they were persuaded to tackle this – their first half-marathon – and were glad to have completed it.

She added: “I know that times have been very difficult recently for everyone.

“I would like to thank you all for your generosity.”

Karen Duff, a corporate fundraiser at the hospice, said: “Thank you so much to Andrea, Martine, Kailey and Fiona for this fantastic effort raising funds for both us and Mikeysline.

“It’s such a shame the Inverness Half Marathon couldn’t go ahead as usual this year so it’s fantastic to see this group taking on the challenge virtually, and for such an emotive reason. Huge well done.”
