Winner of the world tattie scone championship announced at Taste of Nairn

Thousands of people tucked into a three-day food and drink festival which took place in the seaside town of Nairn.

The sun shone over Saturday’s main action for Taste of Nairn, with a busy town centre as festival-goers enjoyed Scottish and international cuisine from local vendors and arts and crafts stalls on the High Street and at inside Nairn Community and Arts Centre.

The event ran across the weekend and also boasted cooking competitions as well as special menus and events across the town.

Now in its fifth year, the festival organised by Nairn BID also incorporates the World Tattie Scone Championships and the Showstopper Cake Contest.

Visitors were also given the opportunity to take part in the omelette challenge, put their noses to the test with a guess the ingredient task and kids could decorate a biscuit and make fruit kebabs.

Linzi Wilding was crowned the World Tattie Scone Champion with her Spice Up Your Life scone. The competition is sponsored by the Oakwood Cookery School.

Linzi said: “I had never made a tattie scone before, so I had a run through the night before.

“We make a salt and chili chicken dish at home, so we used the mix we have for that and adapted it to work for the tattie scone.

“Me and the family had such a lovely day. We spent the whole day in Nairn and really enjoyed ourselves. Winning the Tattie Scone Contest was the cherry on the cake.”

Phil Stuart won the adult category of the Showstopper Cake contest - sponsored by Makes By Megs.

Phil, who created a Loch Ness Monster Irn Bru-inspired cake, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be this year’s winner. A huge thank you to the Makes by Megs judges. I have had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed Taste of Nairn.”

Winner of the junior category was Joseph Rose, an S3 pupil from Nairn Academy who won a day in the life experience at the Makes By Megs bakery.

Nairn BID manager, Lucy Harding said: “What a weekend we have had. The sun shone and people came out in force to support Taste of Nairn and all that it has to offer. The feedback has been fantastic and it certainly felt like the busiest event to date.”

She added: “The street market which was bustling and the Nairn Community & Arts Centre where we also had a food and drink market, demonstrations from chefs across the town, and the competitions was busy from start to finish.

“I think it is safe to say that Nairn really does have a sensational offering when it comes to food and drink and we are delighted with how everything went. We want to say a huge thank you to the Golf View Hotel and Spa who supported us this year as the title sponsor and of course to everyone who got involved from the street musicians, stallholders, judges, other sponsors, the chefs and of course the participants in the competitions.”
