A Nairn health facility for children with disabilities has received a funding boost from a wind farm developer.

Nairn Hydrotherapy Pool will benefit from a £5000 donation from RES, the world's largest independent renewable energy company.

The facility, originally built in 1985, also helps people living with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions as well as expectant and postnatal mothers.

It was forced to close after the Covid-19 pandemic began, but re-opened in October.

Nairn Hydrotherapy Pool trustee Alastair MacGregor recalled: “Our disabled son James had been recommended for hydrotherapy treatment by Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, but there were no local facilities when he returned home.

“At that time, there were 44 other children in the area with disabilities and so we set up a committee and managed to raise funds for the pool which was built 18 months later by Tullochs of Nairn.

“This is such an important facility for Nairnshire which makes a big difference to people’s lives.

“Securing funding is always a challenge and running costs have increased quite significantly within the current economic climate.

“RES’s kind donation is gratefully received and will really help with our running costs. It’s given us all a boost.”

Inverness and Nairn MSP Fergus Ewing said: “The hydrotherapy pool is a much-loved local facility in Nairn and enjoyed by many in the local area with wide benefits to their health and well-being.

“I know, for example, it has been previously used to help with antenatal and postnatal classes for pregnant women.

“The donation from RES is most welcome. I’m sure many in the Nairn community will appreciate the gesture and enjoy the benefits of it and my thanks goes to RES.

RES Project Manager Paula Batchelor added: “As a responsible developer we want to demonstrate our commitment to being a good neighbour and have worked closely with the community around Ferness to explore ideas and opportunities for local benefits from our Cairn Duhie Wind Farm proposal, should it go ahead.

“We’re also really pleased to provide this donation which supports the trust in delivering such an important local service to the wider Nairnshire area.”

RES develops, constructs and operates renewables projects across Scotland.

In the Highlands, the company has submitted revised plans for the 16-turbine Cairn Duhie Wind Farm which will be determined by Scottish Ministers later this year.

The firm says the scheme would be capable of producing low-cost renewable energy for around 52,000 homes, delivering approximately £4.4 million of inward investment to the local area in employment and use of local services.

It would also pay over £21 million in business rates to Highland Council during its operational life.
