Great Wilderness Challenge event cancelled due to coronavirus

The 2020 Great Wilderness Challenge has been cancelled, organisers have announced.

The event, which was due to take place on August 15, involves a 25-mile run or walk from Dundonnel through remote mountain passes to Poolewe.

There are also shorter options, including a 13-mile and seven-mile route, as well as all-abilities routes nearer to Poolewe.

In an email to participants, the organisers said: "We have been closely monitoring the Covid-19 situation as it has developed in the UK and have reached the conclusion that, for the safety of participants, organisers and volunteers, this is the only responsible course of action to take."

Those who have already registered for this year's event will be given the option to transfer into next year's event, get a refund or donate their entry fee to Highland Hospice.

The organisers added: "We are as disappointed as you with this situation but we will look forward to welcoming you all back in 2021 when we will hopefully make the event bigger and more successful than ever."

Next year's Great Wilderness Challenge will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021.
