FREEZING fog left 150 Inverness-bound passengers stranded on London Gatwick airport’s runway for almost two hours last night.

The 7pm easyJet service was kept grounded for safety reasons as low visibility conditions hit the area south of the UK capital. It eventually arrived at around 10.30pm.

Having already boarded the plane, there was frustration for passengers with Tim Holland, the husband of one passenger, writing on Twitter: “What’s the issue between Gatwick and Inverness today?

“My wife has been down for a funeral … fair to say she’s in bits at the moment … you’ve left a plane full of people on a runway for an hour and a half … abysmal service.”

But easyJet stressed the delay was essential for passenger safety reasons.

A spokeswoman said: “Due to adverse conditions and safety restrictions our Monday evening flight to Inverness was delayed by an hour and 47 minutes.

“It affected 150 passengers but it was able to make the journey to Inverness.

“Safety is paramount at all times. Unfortunately, once passengers are boarded for a flight in this kind of scenario, we are bound to remain on the runway until such time as we can take off or make alternative arrangements.”
