Innovative miniature vertical farms will be among the attractions at an outdoor festival in Inverness which aims to inspire people to sow, grow and share food as well as music, knowledge and ideas.

The Dandelion Festival will be held at the Northern Meeting Park from September 2-4 and follows a similar festival at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park in June.

The free festivals are part of a six-month series of events and programmes throughout Scotland highlighting topics such as food poverty, climate action and sustainability.

The programme includes a tour of Cubes of Perpetual Light which are designed to foster accelerated growing and have been developed to grow hundreds of seedlings under LED light, combining design craft, traditional horticultural expertise and technological innovation.

The cubes also become music installations carrying 12 specially commissioned works by 15 Scottish and international artists.

At both festivals, a pavilion installation will form a ‘living’ stage-set, made from 60 Cubes of Perpetual Light brought together.

Artists for the Inverness line-up are due to be announced in June.

In addition, Cube Installations will take place at Inverness Botanic Gardens from August 15-29 and there will also be a 'Free for All’ event with free vegetable plugs on Saturday July 23 at Bught Park.

Music, art, theatre, street performance and storytelling will all feature in Dandelion’s programme.

Commissioned by EventScotland and funded by the Scottish Government, Dandelion is Scotland’s contribution to UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, a programme of creative events.

Martin Green, chief creative officer for UNBOXED, said: "Dandelion is a brilliant coming together of artists, designers, technologists and scientists to make something special and important about what we eat, how it grows and what we can do ourselves, wherever we live. "Through the cubes, the music and the opportunities to participate, Dandelion is sowing the seeds for all of us to think about and put into action how we create a sustainable future."
