WATCH: Inverness rigger and musician curates a music video for his step mum to cherish

An Inverness musician is keen to put Highland music on the map with his new music video which, to his surprise, has received an overwhelmingly positive response.

Michael MacGillivray (33), from Inverness, started pursuing music during the Covid lockdown in 2021 and now performs under the name MACGILLI.

Michael creates his own celtic “loop music” with guitar and frequently curates his own videos to accompany the songs.

He has played at Belladrum and Inverness venues Upstairs, The Highlander and the former Iron Works while he also works as a rigger, time spent working offshore also giving him the opportunity to let his artistic imagination roam.

He said: “I do have a guitar where I’m working, but I’m very cautious of my neighbours who are also working in the cabins next to me!”

Michael’s latest music video features his family and contemplates how precious time is and the importance of capturing moments. To his surprise, almost 100,000 people have tuned in to view it on social media.

He said: “Every song that I write is different and it’s weird instrumental music which all comes from one guitar.

“The title of the song ‘Moments in Time’ gave me the idea that ended up being the video. I think the older we get, the more aware we are of time passing and I often think of past relatives who I would have cherished to see through some videos.

“So, I created this video for my stepmum of her parents, so it would be something for her to look back on and cherish.”

Next on the cards for Michael is attending The Runrig Experience - The Highland Return as support act next month.

He was delighted to have been given the opportunity saying it’s the biggest thing he’s ever been asked to do and says he is always grateful for the support of the Highland community.
