VETERANS in Inverness have been left shocked and disappointed after the city's main war memorial was targeted by vandals.
Graffiti has been scratched on one of the main panels at the memorial in Cavell Gardens, prompting a call for CCTV to be installed nearby.
Although it is not known when the vandalism happened, members of the Inverness branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) noticed it last month during commemorations to mark the 75th anniversary of VJ Day which brought World War II.
It also comes in the wake of disbelief and anger at campers who pitched their tents in the war memorial grounds.
Joe Davidson, vice chairman of the Inverness RBLS branch, said he and other members were shocked to see the graffiti.
"Personally, I feel disgusted by this – that anyone could defile a war memorial," he said.
"It is crazy.
"Everyone is shocked and disappointed by this."
He said the memorial had been previously targeted by vandals within the last year.
On that occasion, the graffiti was removed by pressure-washing the memorial.
"Maybe it is time to have CCTV in the area," he said.
"I feel CCTV would help to dissuade people doing this, knowing they are being watched."
The branch has informed Highland Council of the graffiti.
