Plans to place a Top Up Tap in Fort Augustus have been withdrawn.

It was part of a water campaign aimed at encouraging people to reuse bottles and drink more healthily.

Scottish Water originally lodged plans to install one of its bottle refill stations in the heart of the village but the application – for land 20m south of Macveans Shop, outside the Scottish Canals centre in Canalside North – was withdrawn at the end of last month.

Fort William and Inverness were among the early Highland recipients of Top Up Taps and plans for one in Nairn were approved by Highland Council in January.

Applications have also recently been lodged to install one in Drumnadrochit and a further one in Inverness, at the junction of Ardross Terrace and Ness Walk on the riverfront.

So far the growing network of top up taps across Scotland has saved the equivalent of half a million plastic bottles, according to Scottish Water.

The 50th water refill tap was recently installed at Glenfinnan in the west Highlands.
