A candlelit vigil will be held in Inverness on Saturday to mark the murder of transgender teenager Brianna Ghey.

The 16-year-old was stabbed to death in a village park in Cheshire on Saturday. A boy and girl, both aged 15, have appeared in court charged with murder.

A vigil, supported by Highland Pride, will be held at noon in Falcon Square, Inverness, to mourn Brianna's death.

Stephen Doyle, of Highland Pride, said: "Understandably, there has been a huge outpouring of grief across the country, with candlelit vigils spontaneously occurring in over 30 cities.

"I think it speaks to the growth, and increasing engagement and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in the Highlands and Inverness, that the community here have also called for and planned a vigil."

He said that Brianna’s friends and family had described her as a unique, vibrant and helpful person.

"Despite being born into a world that is often hostile to transgender people, we can imagine that, had she lived, she would have strove to have a life full of joy, and fulfilling amazing experiences, and that she would have continued to inspire and touch the lives of all the people she would come across," he said.

"But now this has been snatched from her. Just as life was starting to get to the good parts."
