Urgent repairs closed the Highland Mainline in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The closure was due to an issue with the track between Pitlochry and Dunkeld & Birnam stations, meaning early morning journeys between the central belt and Inverness were cancelled at the time of writing.

The 5.36am Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street train was being delayed at Blair Atholl while repairs were carried out.

A spokesperson said: "We are having to carry out a safety inspection on the line between Pitlochry and Dunkeld.

"For safety reasons services will be unable to run between these stations.

"Our staff are onsite and are working as quickly as possible to get the line reopened."

At the time of the last update, posted at 5.49am, they warned that disruption was expected until at least 8.30am - although this time will be subject to change depending on the nature of the inspection/repairs.

Elsewhere in the Highlands, the 7.18am Elgin to Inverness train was also cancelled, with ScotRail saying this was due to a train conductor being ill.
