Fire crews spent six and a half hours battling a large gorse fire at Fort George near Inverness.

Around 35 firefighters and volunteers were sent to the scene after the alarm was raised at 1.35pm yesterday.

They arrived at the incident around 2pm and a total of four fire appliances, two terrain vehicles and a water carrier were also dispatched to the MOD firing ranges.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman today confirmed the last appliance was able to leave the scene at 8.30pm yesterday.

They used beaters to put out the flames and when they first arrived the blaze covered an area of 200m by 100m but the flames were being fanned by the wind.
