A HIGHLAND councillor said they are doing all they can to promote sustainability after campaigners gathered at the council's headquarters in Inverness this morning.

Members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Highlands and Islands were in front of the council's headquarters to ask the council for stronger measures to tackle climate change before the meeting of the Climate Change Working Group.

Councillor Trish Robertson, chairwoman of the Climate Change Working Group, said: "We are doing all we can as fast as possible but there are many legal obstacles and other barriers which we have to face, and we are a big organisation so it's not easy but we do our best to move as fast as we can.

"At the same time, there are some issues which we cannot legislate upon, we can't tell the big industries to stop using fossil fuels, you can't stop people from taking a plane. There are many issuer which fall under the responsibility of the Scottish and UK government and other economic aspects that need to be taken into account."

Green MSP John Finnie said: "While I’m not aware of this morning’s protest, there’s no doubt that the peaceful protests about climate breakdown have focused some, but sadly as yet not all, minds.

“I’m pleased Highland Council have a group considering climate issues, however, they sadly remain committed to extensive road building expansion.

“Rather than perpetuating the growth of private motor car travel, they should be promoting rail schemes and examining running bus services."
