An email has been sent to all students of the University of the Highlands and Islands following a 'very serious' cyber attack.

All systems and networks across the university's partnership are experiencing an ongoing 'cyber incident'.

The email to students states: "We are dealing with an ongoing cyber security incident which has affected our key systems and services at all campuses.

"Our IT staff are working hard to minimise disruption to students.

"All campuses will be closed to staff and students on Monday."

It continues: "Due to our controls around students' personal data we do not currently believe that personal data has been affected. There is helpful information on the university website about how to keep your own personal IT security up to date.

"We are currently unsure [how long it will take to resolve] and ask for your patience while we do our best to deal with a quickly changing situation. This is a serious incident, and it will take time to fix."

Bosses added that students will not be penalised if they cannot submit work and urge them to discuss deadline problems with the person leading the course.

It adds: "We aim to issue a further update to students tomorrow at noon. All updates will be posted on the university website at www.uhi.ac.uk/latestnews and through social media channels as well as emailed to you.

"This is a very serious incident. We will get through this, but it will take time and put pressure on you when you are all already doing your best because of Covid-19.

"We want you to succeed and we will be working hard to support you to complete your course whatever your circumstances are. But if you are struggling with any health and wellbeing related issues please don't forget that our student support teams across the university partnership are here to help and details of local contacts and services can be found on our support page [online]."
