It is unclear how long of High Street and Bridge Street in Inverness will be closed due to a sinkhole.

Highland Council announced yesterday the emergency complete closure of High Street and Bridge Street in Inverness amid growing concerns over a sinkhole.

Problems first became evident on Wednesday after part of the road surface cracked and collapsed inwards following a water mains burst and issues with a sewer.

The closure was at first thought to require to remain in place for up to three days and was implemented from 7pm last night (Thursday, August 8).

However, an update issued from Scottish Water - which is carrying out the repairs - now states it is ‘unclear’ how long the road will need to remain shut.

The communication read: “Once the damaged sewer has been exposed, we will be in a position to assess the extent of the repair required.

“Unfortunately, we cannot say at this stage how long the road closure will be required but we will do all that we can to complete the necessary work as quickly and safely as possible. We will update you as soon as we can.

“Everything is being done to minimise any disruption although we appreciate given the location this is inevitable.

“We would like to thank everyone who is being affected for their patience and understanding.”

A Highland Council spokesperson added: “Scottish Water is responsible for the works, as the sinkhole developed following a water main burst. The work is being carried out by their contractor.

“The Highland Council is in close contact with Scottish Water and will be requesting regular updates on progress of the works. Inverness BID and Inverness Chamber of Commerce were informed of the emergency road closure last evening and the Council has promoted the closure widely to the media, and public on social media so that local businesses, residents and the travelling public can be informed. Traffic Scotland, Police, Fire, Ambulance and NHS Services were also alerted to the road closure.”
