The UK government has announced an eye-catching new initiative to get people to eat out again after promising to pick up half the tab – up to a maximum of £10 per person.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the Eat Out to Help Out discount was aimed at supporting the 1.8 million people employed in the hospitality sector and getting it back on its feet.

It goes hand in hand with a temporary cut in VAT from 20 per cent to just five per cent for six months on food, accommodation and attractions.

Businesses will need to register for the scheme that runs from Mondays to Wednesdays only and they will be able to get the discounted cash back within five working days.

“The final measure I'm announcing today has never been tried in the UK before," said the Chancellor said.

"This moment is unique, we need to be creative, so to get customers back into restaurants, cafés and pubs and protect the 1.8 million people who work in them I can announce today for the month of August we will give everyone in the country an Eat Out to Help Out discount.

“Meals eaten at any participating business from Mondayss to Wednesdays will be 50 per cent off up to a maximum discount of £10 per head for everyone including children.

“Businesses will need to register and can do so through a simple website open next Monday.

"Each week in August businesses can then claim the money back with the funds in their bank account within five working days.

“Our support and with this measure means we can all help out the 1.8 million people who work in this industry.”
