Academy Street has been down to one lane ever since the fire in M&Co in the spring.

TWO-lane traffic will return to Academy Street in Inverness next week, Highland Council has confirmed.

Work to reduce the size of scaffolding shoring up the fire-damaged M&Co building is expected to be carried out overnight from Monday for several evenings.

When complete the scaffolding in Academy Street will no longer jut into the road. A walkway will also be opened in front of the burnt-out building to allow pedestrian access on both sides of the street.

But Strothers Lane will remain closed to all vehicles.

Inverness Provost, Councillor Helen Carmichael, said: “I am greatly encouraged that these changes to reclaim the traffic and pedestrian flow on Academy Street will greatly benefit the local business community in particular and the city in general.”

In order for the scaffolding works to be carried out, Academy Street will be closed to through traffic between 7pm and midnight on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.,

Daytime works are also planned for Thursday and Friday, but will not require a road closure.
