A HISTORIC Highland destination is among the cream of the crop when it comes to the world's top tourist attractions – according to Tripadvisor.

The Highlanders' Museum, based inside Fort George, has been handed one of Tripadvisor's Travellers’ Choice Awards for 2020.

The accolade recognises some of the best attractions worldwide and is only awarded to sites which have such glowing visitor feedback, their reviews place them inside the top 10 per cent of hospitality businesses on the global website.

“We are immensely proud of this accolade and are delighted that we have been recognised as being in the top 10 per cent of attractions worldwide” said Maj (retired) Maurice Gibson MBE, chairman of the museum board.

“This year has been incredibly difficult for the tourism sector as a whole, ourselves included. This accolade proves that the hard work that goes into providing an informative interpretation of the history of the proud Highland Soldier is worthwhile."

He added that it was especially gratifying, as the accolade was awarded shortly before it began welcoming people back to the museum earlier this month.

“Winners of the 2020 Travellers’ Choice Awards should be proud of this distinguished recognition,” said Kanika Soni, Chief Commercial Officer at Tripadvisor. “Although it’s been a challenging year for travel and hospitality, we want to celebrate our partners' achievements. Award winners are beloved for their exceptional service and quality.

"Not only are these winners well deserving, they are also a great source of inspiration for travellers as the world begins to venture out again.”

The Highlanders' Museum reopened to the public on September 11, having previously been closed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It reopened after reorganising the displays and deep cleaning the museum to reduce the risk to the public. Visitors are also required to wear face coverings, and numbers will be limited to 20 in the museum at any one time. Pre-booking is also required via www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/fort-george/prices-and-opening-times/

No walk up visitors will be permitted access.
