AN artist whose works featured local scenes across Nairnshire, Inverness and Moray has passed away.

Mary Wilson (81) was a former teacher at Nairn Academy and helped organise some events for the highly successful Nairn Book and Arts Festival.

Her works focused predominantly on seascapes and country scenes and were in great demand by local galleries and collectors.

Mrs Wilson’s husband John was a freelance artist and teacher at Nairn before suffering a stroke in 1978.

Their daughter Rachel Munro said the family moved north when her father secured a teaching post in the late 1960s at Elgin Academy and later moved to Nairn.

“They both combined freelance work with their teaching and dad still dabbles in painting,” she said.

She said after their move to Nairn, her mum was a teacher at Delnies school.

“She also taught at Millbank and Rosebank primary schools then became art and design teacher at the academy,” she added.

Rachel followed in her footsteps and is an art and design teacher at St Thomas Aquinas secondary in Glasgow.

“They lived in Delnies Schoolhouse, then Queen Street and built a house in Cawdor before moving back to Nairn,” she said.

“Mum loved doing seascapes and landscapes in the local area exhibiting in local galleries.

“She was a member of Nairn Arts Society and worked at the Blue Door Studio in Nairn and the WASP studios at the former Links School in Nairn.”

Originally from Carmyle in Glasgow, she had been in failing health.

“But she fought hard,” Rachel said.

A memorial service was held at St Mary’s Chapel in Nairn.
