Nairn Beach Wheelchairs one step closer to March opening
A charity working to bring specialist beach wheelchairs to Nairn has started training volunteers who will help run the service.
Two sessions have been held this month by Nairn Beach Wheelchairs to teach the group about topics such as routes users will be able to take to best access the town's beach, and how hoists will work to enable people to safely transfer into the chairs.
Charity chairwoman Amelia Williamson said: "This is a very exciting time as we near our launch date.
“Yet again, we have amazing community support and the volunteers are so enthusiastic and committed to welcome visitors to our Beach Cabin.
“We will be open for bookings in March and then have a launch party in May. Find us on Facebook for all our updates or check out our website. The wheelchairs are free to loan thanks to all the donations we’ve had to make this an accessible experience."
More than £30,000 has been raised since the Nairn Beach Wheelchairs charity formed last year, allowing the purchase of four chairs.
A fifth will soon be purchased thanks to funding from the Highland Cross.
Two models of the chairs will allow people of all ages and differing mobility needs to travel to the beach thanks to specialist inflated rubber tyres which allow smooth passage over sand.
So far, 12 volunteers have enjoyed the training sessions, based out of the charity's new cabin at the towns High Life Highland leisure centre.
