The Overland 500 has been launched today, taking adventurous 'bikepackers' through the Highlands and Inverness
The Overland 500 has been launched today by Tiso, Scotland’s leading outdoor equipment and clothing specialists.
Described as a leg aching cycle, it is just over 590 miles through some of Scotland’s most breath-taking and spectacular scenery on the newly launched 'Bikepacking' route which goes through the Highlands and Inverness.
Bikepacking is the newest craze for two wheeled adventurers and is in essence, a multi-day tour by bike, completed on mixed terrain or entirely off-road with the rider carrying their equipment on their bike.
The phenomenon is growing fast and offers people a more environmentally friendly way to exercise and holiday whilst tasting the wilderness.
The ‘Tiso Overland 500’ Bikepacking route, created by nomadic cyclist Andy Cox, is a circular escapade through Scotland’s premium off-road byways which also touches base at all seven of Tiso’s stores.
At these checkpoints – from Highland to the Lothians, the North Sea to Clyde coasts – riders can pause for a coffee, replenish supplies, and receive a souvenir stamp in their Brevet (proof of passage) card.
Mr Cox said: "For me, Bikepacking is all about exploration. Exploring my mind and body, what they're capable of, and then the world, what's out there for me to see with my own eyes; the people, the food, the places to sleep.
"The Overland 500 really surprised me with the diversity of landscapes and trails, villages and cities. It was great to get out of my comfort zone, to go places that otherwise weren't on my radar.
"You do not have to be the most experienced cyclist to take part in the route, just choose a section which suits your cycling standard, pack up and enjoy the experience."
The route grew from an idea of Tiso employee Helen Langridge. Along with colleague Rebecca Murray, Helen reviewed much of the route created by Andy.
Chris Tiso, chief executive of Tiso said: “I’m delighted that the concept for this challenge was devised by one of our valued colleagues, underlining the expertise and enthusiasm of all involved at Tiso. "
Accessible via both the Komoot and Strava apps, the circuit is suitable for both leisurely riders and racers for the fastest finish who can opt to feature on the Overland 500 leader board and compete for the Crown.
Also part of the initiative is Trash Free Trails, which encourages riders to have a ‘purposeful adventure’ by picking up a bin bag at checkpoint stores to support trail ‘clean-ups’, mellowing-out in meditation moments and undertaking data collection en route.
Bikepacking brand, Apidura are also on board to add their expertise to the Overland 500 through online guides and specialist equipment.
