A man described in court as a “drunken nuisance” has been fined after shouting and swearing at a pregnant shopworker.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that James Drummond (49) went into Mooney’s convenience shop in the Highland capital’s Lochalsh Road while intoxicated on August 31.

He slammed a £2 coin on the counter but the woman serving him could smell alcohol on him, fiscal depute Victoria Silver said.

She added that the woman noticed he was unsteady on his feet and he was asked to leave after knocking over a stand.

The fiscal said he then became aggressive and told the four-month pregnant woman “I’ll batter you” before he was escorted outside by others.

Defence agent Neil Wilson said Drummond, of Rosehaugh Road, had a string of previous convictions but all for minor offences.

Mr Wilson said his client was “a low-grade drunken nuisance”.

Drummond, who was not actually present in court, admitted acting in a threatening and abusive manner.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined him £300.
