Thousands of jobs to be created by Inverness firm at Nigg
AN Inverness firm is expected to confirm its ownership of the former Nigg oil fabrication yard today.
The Global Energy Group was named preferred bidder for the yard, on the Cromarty Firth, in January.
Nine months ago the company made a call for Inverness workers to enhance their skills in preparation for a proposed revival of the yard, which is set to create more than 1500 jobs in the energy industry on the 238-acre site.
It wants workers in the Highland Capital to be prepared for jobs in offshore wind and wave renewable energy manufacturing.
The group already employs over 3500 people worldwide and has headquarters in Henderson Road and Aberdeen.
Already a tenant at Nigg, Global employs 200 people in oil and gas-related manufacturing.
The deal follows years of wrangling between potential buyers and the owners of the yard, Texas-based KBR and the Wakelyn Trust.
Nigg was named among 11 key sites in the Scottish Government’s National Renewable Infrastructure Plan.
Ardersier was also mentioned but if Nigg does take off it casts doubt over its future as another base for renewables.
