THE Inverness Courier has been shortlisted for the Scottish Weekly Newspaper of the Year award at an annual industry award.

The shortlist, which includes The John o' Groat Journal, has been announced by the Scottish Press Awards.

Content editor at Highland News and Media, Andy Dixon, said: "I am really pleased to have been shortlisted for Scottish Weekly Newspaper of the Year. This is a testament to the hard work of our team.

"The quality of entries was exceptionally high and that making the shortlist is in itself recognition of the quality of both titles."

The awards programme, run by the Scottish Newspaper Society, hosts the annual awards ceremony aimed at recognising excellence across national, regional and digital journalism from across the country.

This year’s judging panel was led by Denise West – previous managing director of Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail Ltd, and chief commercial officer of DC Thomson Media.

Denise West, chair of the Scottish Press Awards judges, said: “The quality of entries was as high as ever, and a tremendous reflection on the skill and effort of journalists and publishers across Scotland in meeting the undiminished challenges facing the sector. The judges had a difficult task producing the final shortlist and my thanks go to them all for the rigorous way they set about the challenge."

"Our thanks also go to all who entered the awards, and we hope our finalists have a great night on September 21, win or lose."

The five local newspapers shortlisted for the winning title this year are The Inverness Courier, John O’Groat Journal, Ayrshire Post, Largs and Millport Weekly News, and last year's winner, the Lennox Herald.

The award ceremony is due to take place on September 21 at DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow Central.

John McLellan Scottish Newspaper Society director, said: “As ever, the Scottish Newspaper Society is extremely grateful to Denise and all our judges for giving up their valuable time to select our finalists, and to our sponsors and our programme coordinators Event Consultants Scotland who without whom the awards would not be the great success they are."

The 43rd Scottish Press Awards are sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland, Diageo, VisitScotland, Edrington, Openreach, SGN, Glenmorangie, Amazon, The Law Society of Scotland, Women in Journalism Scotland, BIG Partnership, Event Consultants Scotland and Scottish Newspaper Society.
