The first ballots have been arriving at the count centre for the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross and Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire seats.

It is expected to be a long night but the word here is that staff hope to get through the counting in short order and possibly reach the declaration stage earlier than last year – but there are no promises.

Tens of thousands of votes will need to be counted from across the whole of the Highlands and collating them from more than 245 polling stations is no mean feat with more than 700 staff involved during the day and overnight.

Candidates are expected to arrive later in the evening but their staff and volunteers have been here since the start acting as election monitors in the early stages.
