Mercury plummets below -11C again in the Highlands, with national forecasters warning of potential for even colder night on Friday amid continuing Met Office warning for snow and ice

ANOTHER frigid night and fresh inland snow sent temperatures tumbling across parts of the Highlands last night.

Yet again Ross-shire was the coldest spot, recording a temperature of -11.2C at Inchbae, according to data from Highland Weather (see @HighlandWeather on Twitter, and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Highlandweather).

Brinmore in Strathnairn also hit negative double figures, with the mercury bottoming out at -10C.

Elsewhere, the Cairngorms, where lying snow helped to send temperatures falling, recorded a temperature of -9.3C at the Cairngorm Summit.

And, with national forecasters expecting temperatures to plummet again tonight, it is thought that it could get even colder than on the coldest night of this winter so far, which was recorded at Loch Glascarnoch just this week when the mercury hit -12.2C.

Meanwhile, motorists in inland areas faced fresh snowfalls last night, with snow gates forced to close at a number of high passes – including the A939 at Tomintoul and Cock Bridge.

The A93 was also hit, with gates closed between Braemar and Spittal of Glenshee.
