A PROJECT in memory of a mother and son will go ahead thanks to a funding boost from Highland Council’s Nairnshire committee.

At a meeting last week, the funding application by Team Hamish to support the completion of the second phase of their plan to revitalise the Nairn Links was one of the two approved.

Team Hamish was created in memory of Hamish Hey and his mother Susan, who passed away three years after her son.

Hamish’s father, Sam Hey, said about the funding: “We are delighted that the local councillors have decided to support our proposals so that we can continue revitalising the Links.

“We have had so much support from the local community and it’s been great to have so much support going forward.

“This is a legacy for both Susan and Hamish, and for us it is really important to see the plans coming together in such a positive way, despite the circumstances.

“The response from the community has been fantastic, having a place where people can enjoy and come back together and enjoy these spaces – especially after covid – is really important

The £54,790 allocated from the coastal communities fund and place-based investment fund will see the initiative started with the Splashpad go ahead with the introduction of a new linking footpath as well as seating and tables which will be designed with the help of the community.

Hamish grandmother, Liz Bow said: “We are more than delighted that the memory of Hamish and Susan will live on, and this is thanks to the community.

“We are absolutely delighted about the funding coming from the council. It’s a brilliant amount and it will be great for the progression of phase two.

“It’s Nairn that have been part to be creating this vision as we aim to reinvigorate the area and bring it back to life.”

A total of £83,456 was allocated to Team Hamish application and Nairn Access Panel, which applied for funding for a beach access platform and ramp.

The latter will receive £28,666, which means the project is now fully funded and will help disabled people to access the popular beach
