Inverness has been claimed to be Scotland’s most ambitious city, following research by management training business Corporate Coach Group.

The study used Google search data to find the places in the UK where residents were most likely to be searching for the tools and knowledge to achieve their personal and professional goals in 2021.

Search terms included “how to get a promotion”, “how to be successful” and “how to set goals”.

The search volume of each of these was then compared to population size to establish the likelihood of people in each city to search for self-improvement tips.

Inverness, with a population of around 45,000 and an “ambition score” of 30.33, not only topped the scores for Scotland, the city was placed fifth on the nationwide poll and the only Scottish location in the top 10.

The most ambitious town in the UK is Bangor in north Wales, according to the Corporate Coach Group study, with an ambition score of 115.89 – more than twice that of second placed Truro in Cornwall (50.51). Salisbury and Chester completed the top five.

When comparing the data across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, it was Wales that took top spot when it came to ambitions in 2021.

Welsh residents were on average more than twice as likely to search for advice on how to achieve their personal and professional goals this year, compared to those throughout the rest of the UK with an average ambition score of 35.12 in comparison with 14.97 for Northern Ireland and 13.20 for England.

Inverness’s high placing not withstanding, Scotland was found to be least ambitious of the four nations with a score of just 11.70.

Management training expert and Corporate Coach Group founder Chris Farmer said: “Ambition is the starting point of achievement. When people have ambition, they have something good to talk about, plan for and act upon.

“With the current situation that we’re all in, it is easy to lose motivation and to slip into bad habits. Setting ambitious goals, both for yourself and in collaboration with your employers, is the proven way to keep minds positive, focused and confident.”
