As a new sleek hair salon opened in the bustling Crown shopping area in Inverness, an historic memory was revealed.

When the sign above the previous business, a mortgage brokerage, was taken down, the beautiful hand painted lettering of a 1940’s sign was uncovered declaring the shop as once being A MACGILLIVRAY Boots and Shoes.

Now thanks to the the new occupant Stuart Brown of Stuart Brown Organic Hairdressing, the 79-year-old sign is here to stay.

Stuart, who has decided to move his business into town from Belladrum, said: “I am absolutely over the moon with the old sign. It will be staying no matter what happens.

“I was not too bothered about having a new sign, so I am very happy to see it stay. It looks really good.”

By a strange quirk of fate, he said that relatives of one of his clients actually ran Macgillivray’s shoeshop when it opened in 1945 just after World War 2.

A worker at a nearby cafe said: “The sign has been quite a talking point, and it’s great that the new business is not painting over it or covering it up.”
