Two street markets showcasing the best local produce have been planned for Nairn over the coming months.

The first farmers’ market which is being run by Nairn BID and the organisers of the Inverness Farmer’s Market will take place on August 14.

The second will be on November 27, when it is hoped it will form part of the Christmas lights switch-on.

It is expected that more than 50 stalls will line the High Street, which will be closed to traffic during each event.

Nairn BID manager Lucy Harding said: "After a tough year-and-a-half we are delighted to be able to stage our first event now that restrictions have been eased, and we hope that this is the start of things getting back to some normality.

"For a while now businesses and the people of Nairn have requested that the town hosts a regular street market and we are delighted that with the help of the organisers of the Inverness Farmers’ Market that we are bringing two to Nairn in 2021. The team at the Inverness Farmers’ Market supported Nairn BID with the 12 Hours of Christmas event in 2019 and the market was one of the highlights."

She added: "We hope that the businesses on the High Street will embrace this opportunity. Nairn BID is offering 10 free stalls to BID members and we are encouraging High Street-based businesses to spill out on to the street and to offer market day promotions. We have already had a great response to this.

"The Nairn BID team will be doing all we can to promote the event to make it a success and we will be showcasing the market on our website and social media sites including our Nairn Scotland tourism pages."

Debbie McBean, of Inverness Farmers’ Market, said: "Inverness Farmers’ Market are delighted to be working with Nairn BID to hold a market in Nairn High Street. We have been trying to organise a market for 18 months but the Covid-19 rules and regulations would not allow us to proceed.

"We have a wonderful mix of market stalls and shopkeepers hosting in their own premises which will fill Nairn High Street. We look forward to welcoming locals and visitors and we hope this will lead to more markets being held in Nairn and give customers the chance to buy locally reared, produced and items made in our area. We all think that Nairn deserves the best and we will be giving you that."

She added: "The market will be run within the Covid-19 rules and regulations, but this will not preclude us from having fun."

Meanwhile, Nairn BID has decided not to stage Wheels of Nairn for a second consecutive year.

Lucy said: "We hope, like everyone else that we will be able to bring a full and vibrant event schedule back to Nairn for 2022."
