Storm Darragh to blanket parts of the Scottish Highlands in up to 20cm of snow, warns the Met Office
Snow disruption is likely to hit the Highlands when Storm Darragh arrives, the Met Office has warned after issuing a yellow alert for the region.
Up to 20cm of snow is expected on higher routes overnight tonight, and it may even accumulate to lower levels for a time this evening.
Drifting could also make matters worse, the Met Office added.
The new warning, which has just been issued, will come into force at 8pm on Friday and run until 9am on Saturday morning.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “A period of snow is expected to affect higher ground of Scotland during Friday evening and overnight into Saturday morning.
“About two to five centimetres of snow is expected to fall above 200 or 300m with 10 to 20cm above 400m which will bring difficult travelling conditions and some disruption to higher routes.
“Drifting of lying snow across the very highest routes above 400m may add to the impacts. Temporary snow accumulations may also affect lower levels for a time on Friday evening. The snow will become more showery and turn to rain or sleet through Saturday morning.”
The warning area covers a region from Daviot, just south of Inverness, southwards across Loch Ness and most of the Great Glen, Glencoe, Rannoch Moor and as far south as Stirling and the central belt - taking in the Cairngorms, the wider Grampians and the Trossachs.
It will also extend eastward into southern parts of Moray and westward past Loch Cluanie in Ross-shire.
