A collection of brightly painted stones has been gradually growing along the walls of an Inverness primary school.

Crown Primary has been inviting locals to paint a stone and add it to the chain, in the hope of raising spirits during lockdown.

Principal teacher Cat Morton said they were inspired by a school in Edinburgh which did a similar thing.

She added: “We loved it and adapted it to create a community stone chain as we thought it would be a lovely way to unite the community during these uncertain times.

“Community partnership is one of our six core values at Crown and by participating in this project, pupils were giving back to their local community and connecting with each other.

“They were practising different strategies to support their mental wellbeing and the wellbeing of others and we have had an extremely positive response to the project – the Crown community are always enthusiastic and up for a challenge.”

The initiative was set up with pupils via Google Classrooms.

Miss Morton said: “We added a bit of mystery and, more significantly, humour, by using a storyline approach – The Legend of the Lockdown Stone. Furthermore, we added a sign to the railings so that people in the community knew about the project and how to contribute.

“It has been so lovely to see people stop and take a look as they are walking past the school. The stones are all unique and have brought smiles to many faces.”

So far there are more than 180 stones in the Crown community chain.

Miss Morton thanked everyone who had made a contribution, adding: “The stones will be repositioned in the school garden when we come back in August and will be a lasting memory of this very unique term and how well our pupils and families came together and supported each other using their creativity.”
