S2 classes were cancelled at Nairn Academy on Wednesday due to a staffing crisis caused by staff illnesses, ongoing job vacancies and a lack of sufficient cover at the Highland school
Challenging staff shortages caused by a perfect storm of teacher illness, job vacancies and "very limited cover capacity" forced a Highland school to close to S2 classes on Wednesday.
Nairn Academy took to its social media channels last night to warn affected parents and pupils that it was forced to take the unusual action on Wednesday, but stressed that classes for S2 pupils will resume on Thursday.
Its other classes were unaffected.
A spokesperson for the school said: "We are currently facing an unusual number of staff absences through illness, and have vacancies. We have very limited cover capacity within the school staff.
"Whilst we are grateful for the support of several regular supply staff and are making every effort to secure additional supply for the coming weeks, staffing remains an ongoing challenge.
"Staffing for [Wednesday] is particularly challenging. We have had to make the difficult decision to close to all S2 pupils. We fully acknowledge the pressure this puts on families and the impact on young people. This is not a decision we have made easily or lightly.
"S2 pupils can access learning through Bitesize. Staff will be unable to post work on the Google classroom as they are class committed and preparing senior pupils for prelims starting next week. S2 pupils will return on Thursday, and we will provide all parent/carers with a further update [on Wednesday].
"Thank you for your support."
