PLENTY of people are putting on a brave face amid the coronavirus lockdown.

But what about a funny one?

Make-up artist Madeleine Hewitt hit on a bright idea to try and lighten people’s moods and it is already chiming with cooped up kids and parents.

Inspired by the endeavours of her own daughter, five-year-old Millie, Mrs Hewitt has launched a children’s make-up contest and has promised to reward the best or most entertaining picture or video entry with a free gift voucher for a full make-up consultation with lashes.

Details of the challenge are outlined on her Facebook page, called Madeleine Hewitt Makeup Artist, where a video shows little Millie having a whale of time plastering colourful products on her mum’s face.

Already, the response has proven to be a morale-booster for Mrs Hewitt, also a lecturer in fashion and make-up at Inverness College UHI, as she grapples with the realities of social distancing.

The Tornagrain mum-of-two said: “It’s not just mums and daughters – we’re looking for dads, grans, foster parents, guardians, carers, sons – anyone – to take part.

“The notion came to me when I was messing about with Millie and she was having an absolute ball putting make-up on me.

“I’m like a lot of parents right now, with my hands full with Millie and her brother Harry, who is two in May. Especially in the lockdown, it is very full-on.

“I’ve obviously had to suspend all face-to-face work, as well as my work as a lecturer so it’s a difficult time. The idea is therefore just to try and create a bit of light-hearted fun.”

Mrs Hewitt, who has been a make-up artist for the last 10 years and self-employed since February last year, works from a studio in the grounds of the home she shares with husband Jonny.

She added: “Everybody has been so funny. I’ve been sent loads of pictures and selfies and it’s been lovely, absolutely hilarious. It’s given me a real giggle.

“It is also nice that it is not just the mums and daughters getting involved, with a good number putting make-up on dads and brothers. Hopefully people will see it and think ‘do you know what, we could do with a laugh and something else to keep us busy’. The voucher also might give someone something to really look forward to once all this is over.”
