The Highlands, Islands and Moray property market is particularly buoyant at the moment, with many properties getting snapped up as soon as they come onto the market. Demand is outstripping supply, but that doesn’t mean sellers shouldn’t be doing everything they can to make their home as attractive as possible.

It may seem like a thankless task to ensure the property is in as good a condition as it possibly can, particularly if you are going to be moving out. However, you’ll want to address any issues if they are going to show up in a Home Report. Making your home look attractive may also make sure you receive the best offer possible.

We've pulled together some quick and inexpensive ways to get your home ready for going on the market. Our expert estate agents in the Highlands, Islands & Moray can help with the rest.

1. First impressions count

It’s a cliché but only because it’s true. Potential buyers will be making up their minds before they’ve set foot through the front door, so make sure their first impression is a good one. Bins at the front of the house can be a real turn off. Keep the garden neat and tidy and mow the lawn. Add some flowers in a pot to add to your kerb appeal and make the entrance welcoming.

2. Declutter & bust the dust

Mary Poppins isn't going to stop by and snap her fingers to help you out, so this part will take some effort! Potential buyers like to be able to see what they are buying. Everything should have a place and should look neat and tidy. Keep kitchen surfaces clear and minimise your bathroom products. This will make the home appear more spacious.

3. Put it in neutral

Having a neutral colour palette allows buyers to imagine their furniture in the space and is move- in ready for buyers in a rush.

4. If it's broken, fix it

All those small things we never quite get round to fixing - door handles, creaky doors, dripping taps and light fixtures. The less your buyer has to do, the better the offer you'll receive.

5. Check out what’s on the market?

Do some research and find out what's on the market in your area. What condition are the properties in? What is the list price? This will also give you an idea of what your potential buyers may see – so what do you want to accentuate? What does your home have that those properties don’t?
