WORK on a new children’s splash pad in Nairn started today.

The splash pad is a jointly funded project between Team Hamish, Nairn Improvement Community Enterprise (NICE), Nairn Common Good Fund and Highland Council and is the result of extensive engagement with the community in Nairn.

The family behind the Team Hamish fundraising effort to bring it to Nairn has welcomed progress. Nairn couple Sam and Susan Hey, with daughter Lily (13), began fundraising in memory of their son Hamish who died in 2017 aged just eight after battling cancer. Susan (41) lost her own battle with cancer last month.

Mr Hey said: "Today is huge for Team Hamish!

"But a day of mixed emotions – proud excitement at what we have been able to achieve as a community, but also sadness that Susan isn’t by our side to see works starting on the legacy for her wee boy that she worked so hard for over the last three years.

"I take consolation that both Susan and Hamish will be watching over as this amazing splash pad becomes a reality."

The paddling pool at Nairn Links will be demolished and the project is expected to take about four months to complete.
