Highland Council approved its own plans for generating environmentally friendly power as part of a broader scheme announced two years ago.

In its entirety, the £2.3 million project aims to generate more than £4 million profit and significantly reduce the council’s carbon emissions over the next 20 years by installing a whole series of solar panels on its properties.

The Inverness Royal Academy proposal uses cutting-edge solar photovoltaics technology to turn daylight into electrical power. The canopy is set to comprise 861 panels.

Net profit can be achieved each year for the anticipated 20-year lifespan of the panels.

The scheme as a whole will reduce the organisation’s annual carbon footprint by an estimated 1000 tonnes per year.
