Rail commuters have been hit by disruption on the Far North Line after a signalling fault sparked some cancellations.

The 5.12pm Inverness to Ardgay train, and the 7.29pm Ardgay to Inverness return service were both cancelled shortly before 4.15pm "due to a fault with the signalling system".

The disruption leaves just one train running north of Dingwall this Wednesday evening - the 6.31pm Inverness to Wick train - as the later 9.29pm Inverness departure to Tain has already been cancelled and replaced by a bus replacement service due to long-running track engineering works.

That engineering work began on Monday and will run every Monday to Thursday for two months. Some £1.6m will be spent by Network Rail Scotland replacing rails and sleepers at several locations, including Merkinch, Alness and Dingwall, in a bid to improve service reliability.
