A 44-year-old Nairn man who admitted a charge of drink-driving with more than five times the legal limit of alcohol in his system has been ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid community work.

Christopher Logie, of Balblair Road, previously pleaded guilty at Inverness Sheriff Court to the offence which occurred on the A96 near Delnies on November 10.

Sheriff Gary Aitken was told that Logie was reported by another motorist who saw him swerve about on the road, accelerate sharply and appear to strike an object before pulling into a lay-by.

Fiscal depute Victoria Silver said that Logie was still drinking from a bottle of wine when the officers went to speak to him.

Sentence had been deferred for a background report.

Logie was also placed under 18 months of social work supervision and disqualified from driving for 16 months by Sheriff Ian Cruickshank who certified Logie as suitable for a drink-driver rehabilitation scheme.

If he successfully completes it, Logie's ban will be reduced by a quarter.
