A neighbour from hell who threatened to kill his neighbours and hinted at having a shotgun has been jailed for two months.

Former police constable Donald Bain, of Inverness, appeared for sentence at Inverness Sheriff Court and was told by Sheriff Gordon Lamont: "The court's patience is at an end. I note your similar previous convictions over a period of years which must have been deeply upsetting for your neighbours."

The sheriff calculated at least seven or eight earlier offences which involved Bain in similar disruptive and abusive behaviour and on one of those occasions, he spoke about a shotgun and called his neighbours names during a tirade of abuse before threatening to kill them.

The 73-year-old had previously admitted a charge of threatening or abusive behaviour committed on December 14 last year, which was less than a year after he threatened the brother of one of his neighbours with a knife.

The latest incident involved a drunk Bain again hurling abuse at another neighbour whom he believed to be a police constable.

He bellowed: "Hey constable, I am speaking to you. You want to come out here and face me" and he called her a “f***ing w****” and a “f***ing c***”.

She recorded him on her mobile phone as he called her and her partner - who arrived shortly afterwards - “a pair of f***ing cowards”.

Fiscal depute Adelle Gray told the court that he mentioned a shotgun, and said: “I’m going to f***ing kill you both. Say goodbye to your number [a reference to a police officer's identity number]. Where's your police now? Send your troops.

"The woman called the police and her partner, who returned to the property and found Bain in the street still shouting and swearing, saying: 'Cowards. I know you are home. I can see your car.’"

Ms Gray added: "Her partner recorded him on his phone and during the recording, the accused said: 'I will kill you. I will destroy you and your police b****.' Police were contacted again."

His solicitor Samantha Morrison said that her client “cannot recall much due to drinking and prescribed medication".

The court heard that the entire episode lasted around 90 minutes.
