AN AMBITIOUS Scottish rewilding project based near Loch Ness scooped a prestigious award last week for its nature recovery efforts.

Highlands Rewilding took home the prestigious Business of Nature Award at RSPB’s Nature of Scotland Awards on Thursday evening in recognition of its efforts to enable nature recovery and community prosperity through rewilding.

Dr Jeremy Leggett, founder and chief executive of Highland Rewilding Ltd and world-renowned solar energy entrepreneur, said: “To see the work we have been doing in combating climate change on our Highlands Rewilding journey recognised by the likes of RSPB and NatureScot is truly encouraging in knowing we are heading in the right direction with many more ambitions still to be achieved.

“This award marks a milestone of where we are in our mission to enable nature recovery and community prosperity through rewilding. It will serve as a fond memory when we look back at the end of the project as we aim to be one of the most impactful accelerators of nature-based solutions by 2026.”

Maggie English and Frances Mills accepted the award on behalf of the entire team for their hard work in helping to tackle climate meltdown and biodiversity collapse.

Highlands Rewilding, made up of 682 hectares dedicated to nature recovery in Inverness-shire and Aberdeenshire, recognise they are at the beginning of their journey which aims to take nature recovery to scale by rewilding the Scottish Highlands. With an expert team including world leading scientists and regenerative agriculturalists they are working to advance the science of land-based carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Community engagement is a huge focus, as is the creation of local jobs.

The 50 current co-owners of Highlands Rewilding are preparing to expand ownership by adding what they hope will be hundreds of retail investors in a crowdfunding campaign which is set to launch this December.

Sponsored by NatureScot, the Business of Nature Award recognises businesses that demonstrate a whole business approach to helping nature in Scotland and those making a positive impact on Scotland’s habitats and wildlife to demonstrate that business can benefit nature.

The awards were held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and saw over 400 members of the conservation community come together for an evening of celebration hosted by naturalist and TV presenter Lolo Williams and TV presenter and radio host Arlene Stuart.
