TIRELESS work by Castle Stuart ground staff was for nothing after play succumbed to major weather delays.

Golf stars took to the links course at 7.30pm - more than 12 hours after scheduled - following the efforts of workers to get the venue ship-shape once again but officials deemed it unplayable.

Play is now due to re-start at 7am tomorrow.

Herculean effort beaten as weather only winner

Landslides on some sections of the course and surface water caused the decision to be finally made after several postponements throught the day.

Several players will aim to complete round two tomorrow morning, after play was suspended mid-way through their rounds yesterday afternoon.

The final round will follow after the European Tour chose to shorten the event from 72 to 54 holes.

Scots Scott Jamieson and Peter Whiteford lead the field alongside Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.
