PLAY at the Barclays Scottish Open will resume at 7.30pm today - weather permitting - at Castle Stuart, near Inverness.

Staff at the links course - which is hosting the golf tournament for the first time - have spent the morning dealing with flash flooding overnight.

Heavy rain forced play to be suspended for more than 12 hours.

It is understood three-and-a-half inches of rain fell within three hours in the early hours of this morning.

The deluge - which included a thunderstorm - means the event will be shortened from 72 to 54 holes and will end tomorrow (Sunday) after round three.

This may change if further forecast thunderstorms for today materialise.

Shuttle buses from Inverness bus station have also been suspended until play at the course can be guaranteed.

When running, the buses will be free of charge and include an additional stop at the rear of Vue Cinema, near Cowan House, at Inverness Business and Retail Park.

People are encouraged to use public transport rather than the car parks, which have been affected by the weather.

Yesterday, golf stars were called off the course mid-afternoon due to the threat of lightning and play did not resume.

Several players were set to start at 7am today in a bid to complete round two - which should have finished yesterday.

Scots Scott Jamieson and Peter Whiteford lead the field alongside Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.
