The Scottish Labour party has announced that its candidate for the Inverness and Nairn seat is Shaun Fraser.

Mr Fraser was backed by Brian Wilson, a founder of the West Highland Free Press and former MP and minister for state under Tony Blair.

At the last election he was seventh on the regional list which saw just one Labour MSP returned - Rhoda Grant.

The seat is now highly contested after the current MSP Fergus Ewing announced that he would not stand for the SNP – but he said he is “sorely tempted” to run as an independent.

That move left the door open for others including other SNP members like MSP Emma Roddick who has put her hat in the ring – though she is yet to be confirmed as a candidate.

The Liberal Democrats will also be looking closely at the seat and it is understood that Mr Ewing’s absence from the contest has created interest among some potential independent candidates.
