THE community in Nairn has been shocked and saddened to learn today of the passing of Highland Council's Nairn area committee leader Tom Heggie.

An ordained minister and retired teacher, Councillor Heggie was coming to the end of his first term on the local authority serving as an independent councillor.

Cllr Heggie first came to Nairn as a young minister at Nairn Old Parish Church and later pursuing a teaching career at Forres Academy before returning to the ministry at Nairn United Reformed Church where he led a major campaign to modernise and upgrade the former Congregational Church building, creating a community hub used by a variety of groups.

He again returned to pursue his teaching career at Nairn Academy and on his retiral was elected to serve on the council at the 2017 local elections.

During his tenure he has campaigned vigorously for a new secondary school for the town.

Nairn Academy was included in phase two of the Scottish Government's learning estate investment programme announced in December 2020, and funding for the project is included in the reprofiled capital programme approved by the council last month.

His wife Mary and family ask that people give them some time to come to terms with what has happened and refrain from calling for the moment.
