Airport welcomes record number of passengers thanks to Swifties and Tartan Army
Taylor Swift and the Tartan Army helped an airport gain more passengers than ever before in a single year.
Edinburgh Airport said Swifties from all over the world travelled through the site when she performed at Murrayfield Stadium in July.
Bosses also said there was increased footfall as fans headed off to cheer on Scotland in Euro 2024 in Germany in the summer.
The airport, which is the busiest in Scotland, has welcomed more than 15 million passengers throughout 2024, and it is among the first airports in the UK to achieve growth in passenger numbers after Covid.
Other factors the airport believes contributed to it seeing record passenger numbers include JetBlue offering daily flights to New York during summer and WestJet adding Toronto and Halifax in Canada to its services.
The airport has announced new routes and airlines for 2025, including the return of American Airlines, while JetBlue has added Boston in the US to its areas of operation, and Austrian Airlines will offer flights to Vienna.
Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “It’s great to hit this major passenger milestone that shows the clear interest that people have in tourism and travel, both to and from Scotland.
“Whether it was supporting Scotland at the Euros, being a Swiftie and singing your heart out at Murrayfield, or travelling to a bucket list destination for that special holiday, we’ve been able to facilitate more than 15 million journeys this year at Scotland’s busiest airport.
“That’s an achievement that reflects the incredible spirit of our team, the excitement of our passengers to see the world, and the growing connections we’re proud to foster across Scotland and beyond.
“We’re already planning for 2025 and what it will bring, and we look forward to seeing even more people next year.”
